Patriots win Player Development award

The league made the announcement a couple days ago, and now we’ll cover it here: The Patriots won the Outstanding Overall Player Development Award for 2009.

The league hands out such awards for teams’ financial education, continuing education, career development and life skills programs, and the one New England won covers all four areas. The release specifically cited the club’s “Safe Boating” program, as well as its financial education seminars and life skills seminars, the latter of which included a talk with Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

The team will be honored before a home game in 2010 for winning the award.

And while we’re here, on the off-field stuff, check out quarterback Tom Brady stumping for the World Wildlife Federation’s Earth Hour, which will take place at 8:30 p.m. on March 27. Brady and Co. are calling for everyone to turn out their lights for an hour that night to make an energy-saving statement about their concern on climate change.
