Is Tebow interest real?

The Patriots’ reported visit with Florida QB Tim Tebow is intriguing, to say the least, as is everything with the Gator legend. And this coming is from a guy who doesn’t think he’s going to be a great pro, and completely believes he’ll have to find a new position in the NFL after watching a lot of his games in college.

Now, if you watch the video above, and you’ve been around football, and you don’t get some chills, I’m not sure you have a pulse.

But does he really work for the Patriots? I say, unless you’re convinced that he can play H-back or even as an in-line tight end (a big New England need), then I don’t think so. Quite simply, with Tom Brady due a long-term commitment soon, it doesn’t seem to make much sense to sink resources into the quarterback position when so many other spots are crying out for help. If you spent a 4 or a 5 on him, fine. Spending a Top 53 pick (the Patriots have four of them) on a guy who might not get on the field is a different story altogether.

I have zero — Zero — issue with using a third- or a fourth- or a fifth-round pick on a quarterback, because I think developing them is good business. Green Bay (having dealt off players like Aaron Brooks, Ty Detmer, Matt Hasselbeck and Mark Brunell) made a cottage industry of it. San Diego reaped benefits this year with Charlie Whitehurst. The Patriots did the same with Matt Cassel.

And here’s the other thing: I’m not sure the interest in legitimate anyway. If you’re trying to keep this secret (and an old colleague of mine and purveyor of this space pointed this out earlier today), I think the last neighborhood you’d dine in is the North End. I live there. Trust me, it’s silly how many people are around there during dinner time.

The bottom line there is that if you don’t want some to know where you’re eating, you don’t make that 30-mile drive from Foxborough. They’d be naive to think no one would say, “Hey, that’s Bill Belichick and … what the … That’s Tim Tebow!!!!” And I just don’t think they’re that naive. Or naive at all. Maybe they didn’t care if they were seen or not. My guess is they knew they would be. Which would explain a lot.
