Sources: Hernandez failed drug tests at UF

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez is considered one of the steals of this year’s draft.

Now we know the reason why he fell.

According to sources with three NFL teams, the red flag that caused Hernandez’s tumble down the board was multiple failed drug tests at the Univ. of Florida. One source close to Hernandez indicated knowledge of just one, and not more than that, failed test, which occurred in February 2008.

Either way, all agreed that “habitual marijuana use” was the reason he fell into the Patriots’ laps in the fourth round. The full story on it is right here.

Hernandez did pass his drug test at the combine, which means he won’t be entered in to the league substance-abuse program. But the history on him is sufficient enough that he will be tested more frequently than the normal rookie upon entry to the league.

The bottom line: The teams I talked to said that Hernandez is low first-round/high second-round talent. And so if the Patriots can get the kid pointed in the right direction, they’ll have one heck of steal. But there’s significant risk involved on this one.
