After this morning’s walkthrough session, the Patriots were back in full pads…
On the roster-positive side, receiver Darnell Jenkins made his camp debut, coming off the non-football injury list. On the roster-negative side, Ty Warren, Nick Kaczur and Matthew Slater were not spotted at all, while Wes Welker, Ron Brace, Thomas Clayton, Bret Lockett and Kyle Love were all on the field in shorts and t-shirts and were put through their paces by the conditioning staff before watching the action.
In a drill with only the receivers and defensive backs going one-on-one, Leigh Bodden had ran stride for stride with Randy Moss on a deep route up the left sideline, but Moss turned his hips at the last second to pull in the ball. During the same drill, Brandon Tate made a nice move on Devin McCourty to get separation on a sideline pass down the right side.
It was a rough day for rookie Zac Robinson, as he threw three interceptions — running the scout-team offense against the top defensive groups, he was picked off by Brandon McGowan (Jackson was the intended receiver). Patrick Chung and Thomas Williams also had interceptions, with Williams pulling in a ball tipped by Leigh Bodden.
Julian Edelman is a budding rock star. During kickoff return work, he fielded the ball and headed to his left. Shut off, he reversed field and went wide right, turning on the jets before being forced out of bounds. This afternoon was the receiver’s turn to sign autographs among the crowd and Edelman stayed for quite a while longer than the “required” time, running from one end of the field to the other to make sure he could appease as many fans as possible.
Tom Brady and Dan Koppen had to be a penalty lap for fumbling a snap.
At the end of the session, Bill Belichick was on the far end of one of the fields running sprints along the yardage lines, something he doesn’t do often, if ever. Offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia did the same thing after the morning practice on the field inside Gillette.
