FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots have had talks with linebacker Derrick Burgess but the issue is not resolved, said Nick Caserio, the Patriots director of player personnel.
Reports have stated that Burgess is contemplating retirement but there hasn’t been an official announcement. The Patriots placed Burgess on the reserve/did not report list so that he would not count against the 80-man roster.
“We’ve had some conversations with Derrick,” Caserio said.”I think there’s still some moving parts on that. We haven’t quite reached a resolution. I”m sure when we get to that point, we’ll let everybody know.”
Other tidbits from Caserio’s press conference:
*On Logan Mankins’s contract situation: “We’re focused on the players that are here. Anything contract related I’m not going to really get into that here today. We’re just going to focus on today’s practice and the players that are here and their individual improvement on a day-to-day basis,” Caserio said.
*On satisfaction of the depth at left guard: “There’s a lot of guys that worked in there whether it’s been Dan Connolly, [Rich] Ohrnberger, or Nick Kaczur so the guys that are here this is their opportunity to go out there and improve on a day-to-day basis. Any player that’s on the club wouldn’t be here if we didn’t feel good about them. That’s why they’re here. So they’ll go out there and ultimately the player is going to define their role and who those players are based on their performance, so we’ll let that play out.”
*The team is two under its roster limit and there are no other additions to the roster at this time.
