Kraft hopes Brady keeps celebrating in Foxborough

This afternoon Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Congressman Barney Frank and others held a press conference to discuss the new solar panels that have been installed at Patriot Place, a big step in the shopping area’s “green” initiative.

But the sports reporters there couldn’t let an opportunity to speak with Kraft about the Patriots go by, and he fielded a few questions about his team.

Most important was the topic of franchise quarterback Tom Brady and his still-unresolved contract situation. Kraft and Brady chatted walking off the field after this morning’s practice, and Kraft was asked if the two were discussing plans for Brady’s 33d birthday tomorrow.

“Actually, it’s unbelievable when you think, when he came here he was 22 and now he’s going to be 33,” Kraft said. “He’s a great cook so he has something very special planned and we look forward to spending many more birthdays with him right here in Foxborough.”

Kraft also lauded Wes Welker and his return from serious knee and shoulder injuries: “He’s really unbelievable. His attitude is super … for any guy our size, for all of America what he represents, is so special. I think his DNA is different because he can take those hits and do things other people just can’t do. His attitude … what a great person. We’re so lucky to have him here.”

He was asked if anyone has stood out to him thus far in training camp, and joked that he didn’t want to get in trouble with Bill Belichick before offering that he really likes the team’s trio of tight ends.

“Hopefully that will make a big difference for us in the red zone and the running game. But there are so many young players on defense and we’re just seeing their development,” Kraft said. “I think a great test will be when New Orleans comes here next week, we have the Super Bowl champions coming here and are going to work with us for two days and then play them, that will be a real good test on where we’re at, and I think going to Atlanta the next week. We hopefully have found a system that will help us to get ready for that first game against Cincinnati here.”
