FOXBOROUGH — Update (4:13 p.m.): The Patriots signed RB Javarris James and TE Jeron Mastrud to the practice squad today. There are still two spots available on the practice-squad.
James is a rookie free agent out of Miami, who rushed for 2,162 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was with Indianapolis during the preseason. Mastrud is a rookie free agent out of Kansas State was with Tampa Bay. He had 1,219 receiving yards.
The Patriots signed four players to their practice squad today, adding defensive back Sergio Brown, linebacker Shawn Crable, offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger and receiver Darnell Jenkins.
Crable returns after being released in July due to a failed physical. He was selected by the Patriots out of Michigan in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2008, but has not played a down.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick said today that Crable “didn’t really get a chance to do much this year in training camp, but hopefully he’ll have enough opportunity to do that on the practice squad.”
Brown is a rookie safety out of Notre Dame, who had a strong showing in the last preseason game against the Giants.
Jenkins, who is in his third NFL season, was signed to the Patriots squad in December 2009. He showed some range in the Giants game grabbing a 66-yard touchdown from Brian Hoyer last week.
Ohrnberger is in his second season with the Patriots.
