FOXBOROUGH — Auburn’s Cam Newton, widely speculated as either the No. 1 or 2 pick in the NFL draft, was the first player off the board Thursday night.
The Carolina Panthers selected the talented quarterback, wasting little time to do so.
The 6-5, 248-pound quarterback will be expected to replace Jimmy Clausen, whose 2010 season was worth forgetting. Clausen posted a 58.4 quarterback rating in 13 games.
Newton was this last year’s Heisman Trophy winner, compiling 2,854 yards passing, 30 touchdown passes and another 1473 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns on the ground.
