Caught up with former Patriots guard Joe Andruzzi this week in advance of his Joe Andruzzi and Friends Golf Tournament at TPC Boston on May 23rd.
Obviously Andruzzi has a connection with Patriots draft pick Marcus Cannon, who is also a guard and battling non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Thought it was interesting that Andruzzi said it was a year before he felt like his old self physically after cancer treatments. Of course, he was at the tail end of his career and his treatment might be totally different than what Cannon is undergoing.
A couple of things I wanted to add on Andruzzi:
- Didn’t have space for his comments on the retirement of former teammate Stephen Neal, who called Andruzzi to tell him the news: “Great teammate but also a great friend. He was one of those great stories in the NFL, that needle-in-the-haystack kind of guy but really took his wrestling background, what he had to do for balance and being a technician, and parlayed that into an NFL career and he did a great job at that. He really pushed himself and knew what needed to be done day in and day out. He had a great career and for him to be able to sit and retire with his health – he had his share of injuries – to be at a point where he can say he had enough and be able to enjoy his kids, not many people can do that. He’s ready and he knows where he’s at in life.”
- One of the new features of the golf tournament will be a live online auction, featuring items from Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. You can bid on items right now here.
