Tentative official timeline

The NFLPA has begun to distribute parts of the new CBA to agents. Those documents have been passed to us.

Here’s the timeline, if the players vote to approve the global settlement today:

NFL will publish the official free agency list, effective at 6 p.m. Friday

Team facilities will open to players for voluntary training, conditioning and classroom instruction.

Trading begins for 2011 League Year, likely at 12:01 a.m..

Starting at 10 a.m. ET, teams can sign their draft picks and undrafted free agent. Also, teams can negotiate but not sign their own free agents and other team’s free agents.

Players on teams, such as the Patriots, can report to camp 15 days prior to the first exhibition game. There would be one day of conditioning, and then two days of practice without contact.

Starting at 4:01 p.m. ET, clubs can waive or terminate player contracts.

Starting at 6 p.m. ET, teams can sign their own free agents and other free agents.

AUG. 4

Deadline for ratification of the CBA by the players.

Teams must be under the salary cap (top 51) when the league year commences, which is when the players ratify the CBA.

One more tidbit from the CBA: “No payments of any kind may be made to any player signing a new contract until ratification of CBA.”
