Final: Patriots 47, Jaguars 12

FOXBOROUGH — Rookie Stevan Ridley scored three touchdowns and backup quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett looked impressive as the Patriots opened the preseason with a 47-12 rout of the Jacksonville Jaguars at Gillette Stadium.

Ridley, a rookie out of LSU, rushed 16 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught seven passes for 47 yards and another score.

With Tom Brady sitting out the game, Hoyer got the start. He played the first half, going 15 of 21 for 171 yards and a touchdown. Mallett played the second half, finishing 12 of 19 for 164 yards.

Taylor Price caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

2:00 4th quarter: Patriots 47, Jaguars 12 — We’ve reached the two-minute warning here and the outcome is obvious. We’ll update more after the game comes to a close.


6:34 4th quarter: Patriots 47, Jaguars 12 — The Jaguars sputtered on their last drive with Todd Bouman throwing two incomplete passes that never had a chance of finding their destination.

The 47 points the Patriots scored is the most the team has scored in an exhibition game. The previous high was 45 in a win over Washington in 1977.

7:35 4th quarter: Patriots 47, Jaguars 12 — Richard Medlin rushed six straight times for 31 yards, capping the Patriots’ drive with a 2-yard TD run — his second of the game.

10:11 4th quarter: Patriots 40, Jaguars 12 — Well, if Buddy Farnham doesn’t have a career as a wide receiver with the Patriots, he might as a defensive back. Farnham intercepted a Todd Bouman pass to give the Patriots another possession.

10:20 4th quarter: Patriots 40, Jaguars 12 — Richard Medlin got some last-minute glory with 2-yard TD run — his first carry of the game.

Meanwhile, Ryan Mallett has appeared to be one cool customer for the Patriots, guiding the second and third teams.

14:47 4th quarter: Patriots 33, Jaguars 12 — Josh Scobee kicked a 31-yard field goal to cap 13-play, 74-yard drive for the Jaguars.

End of the third quarter: Patriots 33, Jaguars 9 — Darryl Richard got his second sack, grabbing Jaguars third-stringer Todd Bouman for a 2-yard loss.

5:20 3rd quarter: Patriots 33, Jaguars 9 — This is turning into the Stevan Ridley show. The rookie running back caught a 16-yard pass for a TD, his third. Earlier in the drive, he found a seam on an outside and exploded for 21 yards, finishing the run with a shoulder dip into a Jaguars defender.


Ridley has rushed 14 times for 50 yards and two touchdowns, and caught six passes for 41 yards and another score.

The drive went 67 yards in six plays in 2:08.

7:28 3rd quarter: Patriots 26, Jaguars 9 — Taylor Price had a nice punt return negated after the Patriots were flagged for an illegal block in the back. He’s shown flashes as both an explosive receiver and a returner.

8:52 3rd quarter: Patriots 26, Jaguars 9 — Todd Bouman is now at quarterback for the Jaguars, finishing Blaine Gabbert’s day. Gabbert finished 9 of 16 for 85 yards.

9:03 3rd quarter: Patriots 26, Jaguars 9 — Stevan Ridley was not to be denied. After getting stopped initially, he bounced outside for a 1-yard TD — his second of the game.

In Ryan Mallett’s debut drive, he completed 6 of 8 passes for 79 yards. Gostkowski kicked the extra point.

The drive was 13 plays, 82 yards in 5:57.

Brian Hoyer finished with 15 of 21 completions for 171 yards and a TD with a QB rating of 111.4. His favorite target was Aaron Hernandez, who had six catches for 68 yards in the first half.

14:55 3rd quarter: Patriots 19, Jaguars 9 — The third quarter is underway with rookie Ryan Mallett under center for the Patriots.

End of the second quarter: Patriots 19, Jaguars 9 — Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 43-yard field as the Patriots went into halftime with a 10-point lead.

Brian Hoyer led the Patriots on a 14-play, 62-yard drive. Key plays on the drive included a 20-yard pass to Taylor Price and Stevan Ridley juking two Jaguars for 8 yards and a first down.

2:00 2nd quarter: Patriots 16, Jaguars 9 — Stevan Ridley made two Jaguars miss pretty badly on a catch out of the backfield. He’s showing some versatility.


4:18 2nd quarter: Patriots 16, Jaguars 9 — Patrick Chung dropped a gimme for an interception of a Blaine Gabbert pass.

7:35 2nd quarter: Patriots 16, Jaguars 9 — A neutral zone infraction on the Patriots allowed the Jaguars to retain possession after they were set to punt. The Patriots’ Darryl Richard got himself a sack on Blaine Gabbert for 7 yards.

9:40 2nd quarter: Patriots 16, Jaguars 9 — Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 46-yard field goal — showing he’s in fine form — to extend the Patriots’ lead. The score was set up by a 43-yard pass from Brian Hoyer to receiver Matt Slater, who made a leaping grab over former Patriot cornerback Terrence Wheatley.

The drive was 6 plays, 49 yards in 2:33.

12:08 2nd quarter: Patriots 13, Jaguars 9 — Jaguars’ Deji Karim returned the kickoff 84 yards before he was tracked down by the Patriots’ Tracy White. But the Jaguars couldn’t do anything with the field position and had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by Josh Scobee, making it, 13-9.

The Jaguars drive was 4 plays, 7 yards in 2:07.

14:15 2nd quarter: Patriots 13, Jaguars 6 — Taylor Price made a nice grab in the back of the end zone from Brian Hoyer for his first catch, upping the Patriots’ lead. Hoyer’s 19-yard pass to Aaron Hernandez helped set up the score.

Price’s catch, an 11-yarder, was reviewed and upheld. The extra point attempt was botched.

End of the first quarter: Patriots 7, Jaguars 6 — As the first quarter came to a close, Brian Hoyer completed a 19-yard pass to Aaron Hernandez who made a tough grab.

To recap, Patriots rookie Stevan Ridley had 1-yard TD at the 1:27 mark of the first while the Jaguars had a couple of field goals from two different kickers to make it 7-6.

0:13 1st quarter: Patriots 7, Jaguars 6 — Matt Turk’s 14-yard punt after a three-and-out gives the Patriots possession at the Jaguars’ 49.

1:27 1st quarter: Patriots 7, Jaguars 6 — Patriots rookie Stevan Ridley found the end zone for a 1-yard TD run. He showed some escapability on his first carry, taking an inside run outside for 6 yards.

The key play of the drive was a 20-yard pass from Brian Hoyer to Aaron Hernandez. Hoyer found Hernandez a second time in the red zone on a 9-yard completion that Hernandez fumbled but was able to recover. Ridley followed up with the 1-yard plunge.

The touchdown was reviewed and upheld.

The drive was 8 plays, 49 yards in 3:57. Stephen Gostkowski with the extra point, for those keeping track of which kickers the Patriots are using.

5:24 1st quarter: Jaguars 6, Patriots 0 — Patriots defensive lineman Landon Cohen sacked Blaine Gabbert and Dane Fletcher got a nice tackle for a loss to force the Jaguars’ first punt of the game after a three-and-out.

7:40 1st quarter: Jaguars 6, Patriots 0 — The Patriots had a three-and-out, with Danny Woodhead getting his first couple of carries on the drive. Brian Hoyer couldn’t connect with Julian Edelman on a pass.

8:38 1st quarter: Jaguars 6, Patriots 0 — Sam Swank kicked a 40-yard field goal as the Jaguars capitalized on the Patriots’ first drive turnover to make it 6-0. The drive was 4 plays, 3 yards.

9:32 1st quarter: Jaguars 3, Patriots 0 — Brian Hoyer completed his first pass of the game to Aaron Hernandez. But Hernandez fumbled after a 7-yard gain. The Jaguars’ David Jones Dawan Landry is credited with forcing the fumble.

9:47 1st quarter: Jaguars 3, Patriots 0 — Josh Scobee kicked a 41-yard field goal to cap a 12-play 57-yard drive for the Jaguars to open the game. Blaine Gabbert completed 3 of 5 passes for 27 yards.

On the drive, Patriots LB Jermaine Cunningham got himself a sack for 7 yards.

13:38 1st quarter: Patriots 0, Jaguars 0 — Blaine Gabbert has completed his first two passes for the Jaguars, both to Jason Hill.
