Welker: ‘This is the best I’ve felt in my career …’

FOXBOROUGH — Wes Welker is entering his eighth year in the NFL but today he said this year he feels his best.

More than a year since his knee surgery, Welker said he feels a step quicker and stronger.

“I feel great,” Welker said. “I feel like I’ve gained a step from two years ago. This is the best I’ve felt in a long time, and I just want to continue to play well and continue to get better and do the things that help the team win.”

Welker is in the last year of his contract, which he said isn’t on his mind at this point in the season. Here are a few comments from his chat with the media after practice.

On his physical progress: “That’s my honest opinion and honestly how I feel. I feel like I’ve worked hard and I feel like as long as you work hard and get better on a daily basis, there’s no telling where the curve is as far as the backside of your career or anything else. For me, I still feel like I’m in my prime.”

On getting a new contract this year: “I’m not really worried about that at all. I’m just worried about going out there and playing ball and I love playing on this team and I enjoy day that I’m out there and I’m going to let my play take care of everything else.”

On where he is at overall: “… This is the best I’ve felt in my career I feel like. I think my knowledge of the game and being able to be healthy it’s really helped. Hopefully, it will keep on improving and keep on getting better as the year goes on.”

On how the receivers complement each other: “I think we complement each other real well. I think our strengths are our route running. I know for Tom, it’s such a big thing to have guys that can run good routes and I feel like our receiving corps does a good job with that and we’re continuing to get better with it and we’ll continue to work on it and get better with it on a daily basis.”
