Final: Lions 34, Patriots 10

End of the game: Lions 34, Patriots 10: The Lions started fast, came with pressure on Tom Brady and never let up, giving the Patriots their first loss of the preseason.

“They handled us easily,” said Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Tom Brady completed 12 of 22 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown while throwing an interception as well.

Wes Welker, who caught the Patriots’ lone touchdown, walked off the field after Brady’s last pass in which he was intercepted. Welker went for the tackle on the play and hurt his neck. He was listed as questionable to return and never did.


4th quarter, 3:43, Lions 34, Patriots 10: Brian Hoyer ended his night on a sour note. He failed to complete a pass to Matthew Slater on fourth down on what was a promising drive. He was replaced by rookie Ryan Mallett on the next drive. Hoyer finished the night completing 6 of 12 passes for 88 yards.

4th quarter, 6:05, Lions 34, Patriots 10: Drew Stanton threw a four-yard pass to Derrick Williams to cap a 12-play, 70-yard drive. The Lions are firmly in the lead at this point.

3rd quarter, 8:52, Patriots 10, Lions 27: Brian Hoyer is in the game. Brady is likely done for the night. Brady completes 12 of 22 passes for 145 yards. 1 TD, 1 INT.

3rd quarter, 9:11, Patriots 10, Lions 27: The Patriots announce Wes Welker has a neck injury and his return is questionable. The Patriots also are tending to CB Jonathan Wilhite who was hurt.

3rd quarter, Patriots 10, Detroit 27: Tom Brady comes out for the second half. But not much comes of it. He’s sent back to the sideline three and out.

Halftime: Patriots 10, Detroit 27: If the Patriots needed a reality check, they’re getting it. The players don’t seem to be on the same page. Brady is struggling and he can’t say much for his offensive line. He ends the first half 11 of 20 for 142 yards with 1 TD and 1INT.


2nd quarter, .12, Patriots 10, Detroit 27: Even Shaun Hill is getting in on this action. He completes a 9-yard TD pass to Aaron Brown that leaves Patrick Chung and Jerod Mayo yapping at each other. The drive took 26 seconds.

2nd quarter, 1:07, Patriots 10, Detroit 20: Hanson kicks a 46-yard field goal to cap an 8-play, 52-yard drive.

2nd quarter, 1:57, Patriots 10, Detroit 17: Stafford is out of the game. He completed 12 of 14 passes for 200 yards and 2 TDs. Shaun Hill is now in the game at QB for the Lions.

2nd quarter,3:58, Patriots 10, Detroit 17: Patriots put together a positive drive after getting chewed out. Brady finds Welker for 44-yard TD pass. Scoring drive: 2 plays, 46 yards, 0.42.

2nd quarter, 6:14, Patriots 3, Detroit 17: Bill Belichick and Bill O’Brien called over the entire team and let out a few choice words after that last drive.

2nd quarter, 8:46, Patriots 3, Detroit 17: Stafford fires a 22-yard pass to TE Tony Scheffler, who blew by Arrington right into the end zone. Scoring drive: 3 plays, 51 yards, 1:30.

2nd quarter, 11:40, Patriots 3, Detroit 10: Rookie Nate Solder enters the game in place of Matt Light at left tackle.

2nd quarter, 11:53, Patriots 3, Detroit 10: The Patriots finally get to Stafford as Kyle Arrington gets the sack (-8 yards) to force Detroit to punt.

2nd quarter, 14:12, Patriots 3, Detroit 10: The Patriots have announced Connolly has an ankle injury and his return is questionable. Bad news for an already thin offensive line.

2nd quarter, 14:56, Patriots 3, Detroit 10: Gostkowski kicks 33-yard field goal to cap 16-play drive.

1st quarter, 0:31, Patriots 0, Detroit 10: Patriots guard Dan Connolly appeared to injure his right leg and has headed to the locker room. There hasn’t been an official report from the Patriots yet.


1st quarter, 7:27: Patriots 0, Detroit 10: Nice pass by Stafford to Nate Burleson that beats Kyle Arrington for a 9-yard touchdown. The Patriots are facing their biggest deficit of the preseason. Scoring drive is 4 plays, 57 yards, 1:43, Hanson kicks extra point.

1st quarter, 12:15: Patriots 0, Detroit 3: Brandon Tate returns the kick for 13 yards, it’s his first return this preseason. Matt Light started at LT, getting his first snaps of the preseason.

1st quarter, 12:22, Patriots 0, Detroit 3: The Lions come out with an aggressive drive behind QB Matthew Stafford and the no-huddle. A dropped pass in the end zone forced the Lions to settle for Jason Hanson’s 33-yard field goal.

Stephen Gostkowski handles the kickoff for the Patriots, which is the first time this preseason for him. He kicked it out of the end zone for the touchback.

DETROIT — We’re here at Ford Field for the third preseason game of the year for the Patriots. They’ll be taking on the Detroit Lions, who will be without the following players: CB Alphonso Smith, HB Maurice Morris, HB Mike Bell, HB Jahvid Best, OT Jason Fox, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch and DT Nate Fairley.
