Final: Giants 18, Patriots 17

FOXBOROUGH — It was the final tuneup of the season for the Patriots, so there was quite a bit of incentive to see a number of players get some game action. Defensive linemen Albert Haynesworth and Shaun Ellis both made their debuts while rookies Shane Vereen and Ras-I Dowling saw their first action as well.

The Patriots jumped to a 17-3 lead, but the New York Giants rallied for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to take an 18-17 win tonight at Gillette Stadium.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for two 1-yard touchdowns to help the Patriots build their lead. After a Giants fumble on the first play of the game, Green-Ellis punched it in for a score. He pounded in another score after Tom Brady connected with receiver Matthew Slater for a 64-yard reception.


The Giants came alive in the fourth quarter with a 65-yard breakaway run by Da’Rel Scott. They took the lead on Derrick Martin’s fumble recovery for a touchdown, followed by a 2-point conversion, with backup QB Ryan Perrilloux connecting with Jerrel Jernigan.

4th quarter, 4:10: Giants 18, Patriots 17 — Ryan Mallett had an opportunity to show us something in the last drive. He threw an incompletion to Tiquan Underwood and was sacked for a loss on third down.

4th quarter, 5:26: Giants 18, Patriots 17 — Brandon Meriweather made a nice open field tackle on Da’Rel Scott.

4th quarter, 7:51: Giants 18, Patriots 17 — Ryan Mallett targets new receiver Tiquan Underwood three times on the last drive, only completing one for 14 yards. The guy is getting his looks before this Saturday’s cutdown.

4th quarter, 9:40: Giants 18, Patriots 17 — Just like that the Giants take the lead. The Patriots’ Richard Medlin fumbled and the Giants’ Derrick Martin recovered, returning it 11 yards for a touchdown. The Giants elected to go for the 2-point conversion, with backup QB Ryan Perrilloux connecting with WR Jerrel Jernigan for the score and the lead. Giants DB Brian Jackson was credited with the forced fumble.

4th quarter, 9:48: Patriots 17, Giants 10 — Darryl Richard got himself a nice sack on Giants QB Ryan Perrilloux. The Patriots forced the Giants to punt again.


4th quarter, 14:40: Patriots 17, Giants 10 — Ryan Mallett was sacked for an 11-yard loss by the Giants’ Jacquian Williams and then overshot Brandon Tate on a pass as the Patriots’ drive stalled. He did complete a 5-yard pass to Buddy Farnham.

4th quarter, 14:50: Patriots 17, Giants 10 — The Giants’ RB Da’Rel Scott broke loose for a 65-yard TD run to start the fourth quarter. The Giants’ drive was 4 plays, 73 yards in 1:36. Rhys Lloyd was good on the extra point.

End of the 3rd quarter: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — We’re getting a decent look at rookie running back Shane Vereen. On defense, we’re seeing defensive backs Ross Ventrone and Antwaun Molden get extensive play. Molden has already made a couple of nice plays at corner.

3rd quarter, 1:26: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — After a 3-yard loss by Shane Vereen, the Patriots turned it over on downs.

3rd quarter, 5:29: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — The Patriots’ Ross Ventrone recorded a tackle for a loss. He’s fighting for a spot on the team so that helps his cause.

3rd quarter, 7:21: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — We’re starting to see a heavy offering of rookie Shane Vereen at running back now. He busted off a run of 14 yards on the last drive. But he also allowed a sack on Brian Hoyer to end the drive. Greg Jones was credited with the sack for a loss of 9 yards.

3rd quarter, 10:12: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — Rhys Lloyd missed his second field goal attempt, this one a 48-yarder as the Giants give the Patriots the ball back.

3rd quarter, 12:55: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — Brian Hoyer took a big hit and sack by the Giants’ Tyler Sash. He fumbled on the play but was able to recover. Giants LB Greg Jones had an opportunity to pick it up but it looked like he couldn’t decide whether to fall on it or use his hand, so he did kind of both. Patriots punted on the next play.


3rd quarter, 15:00: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — And the second half is underway.

End of 2nd quarter: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — The Giants’ Rhys Lloyd was wide left on a 49-yard field goal try. Shaun Ellis recorded his first sack on the drive and Ricky Brown got a tackle for a loss.

The Patriots are in the driver’s seat. Their edge so far has been helped by the Giants’ th three turnovers. David Carr’s pass to Domenik Hixon on the first play of the game resulted in a fumble, recovered by Patrick Chung and taken to the 1-yard line. BenJarvus Green-Ellis punched it in three seconds later. Devin McCourty then intercepted a Carr pass before Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski chipped in a 31-yard field goal. Green-Ellis scored the Patriots’ second touchdown on another 1-yarder after a Tom Brady connection with Matthew Slater for 64 yards.

2nd quarter, 7:03: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — After a long drive, the Giants coughed up the ball again. This time, David Carr fumbled on the Patriots’ 1-yard line, with Andre Carter recovering.

2nd quarter, 14:35: Patriots 17, Giants 3 — After some confusion, the refs call BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 1-yard run a touchdown. The play was set up by Tom Brady’s 64-yard pass to Matthew Slater that took the ball down to the 4-yard line. The drive was 5 plays, 90 yards in 3:11. Stephen Gostkowski converted the extra point.

1st quarter, 2:46: Patriots 10, Giants 3 — Gary Guyton sacked David Carr for a loss of nine yards, forcing the Giants to settle for a 48-yard field goal by Rhys Lloyd. The Giants’ drive was 5 plays, 16 yards, 1:59. Patriots rookie cornerback Ras-I Dowling recorded his first tackle on the drive.

1st quarter, 6:55: Patriots 10, Giants 0 — Albert Haynesworth recorded his first couple of tackles. He shared a tackle with Patrick Chung and then recorded a solo with a tackle of the Giants’ Andre Brown. The Patriots forced the Giants to punt.

1st quarter, 10:18: Patriots 10, Giants 0 — Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 31-yard field goal to cap a 6-play, 20-yard drive that lasted 1:50. The Patriots have now scored off two straight Giants turnovers.

1st quarter, 12:04: Patriots 7, Giants 0 — We’ve already got our second Giants turnover of the day. Devin McCourty intercepted David Carr to give the Patriots the ball right back. Two passes, two turnovers for the Giants.

1st quarter, 14:40: Patriots 7, Giants 0 — BenJarvus Green-Ellis runs in the 1-yarder for a touchdown to capitalize on the Giants’ early turnover. 1 play, 1 yard, 3 seconds on the drive.

1st quarter, 14:44 — For the Giants’ first play, David Carr connected with Domenik Hixon over the middle for 12 yards but the receiver fumbled on the play. Patrick Chung picked it up and rumbled 18 yards to the Giants’ 1-yard line. The play was reviewed and upheld. Rob Ninkovich made the hit to force the fumble.

1st quarter, 15:00 — The New York Giants won the toss and the Patriots will defend the South goal. Game on.
