Final: Patriots 34, Chiefs 3

Final: Patriots 34-3: The tension started with Todd Haley using his timeouts and continued with the Patriots going for a passing touchdown up 27-3. The game ended with a handshake between Haley and Bill Belichick was nothing out of the ordinary. The Patriots win and go up by two games in the AFC East. Back with plenty more from Gillette Stadium shortly.

1:01 4th quarter, Patriots 34-3: Patriots run it in anyway. The Chiefs were unhappy that the Patriots went for it on the Hernandez pass. Patriots didn’t let up. Will be interesting to see if anyone addresses it postgame in the KC locker room.

1:11 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Aaron Hernandez gets a touchdown called back on a Patriots penalty.

2:00 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: We’re at the two-minute mark and the stands are clearing out fast.

3:34 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Tom Brady is still in the game. With Matt Light already injured in garbage time, some fans will surely be questioning the decision to leave Brady in. Of course, this is how Bill Belichick tends to do things.

4:57 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Rookie Shane Vareen in the game as the ball carrier for the Patriots. Gets four yards on his first touch. Stevan Ridley does not have a carry in this game.

5:47 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Matt Light being helped off the field after getting rolled up on his right leg. Not good for the Patriots, and an unfortunate result in what is essentially a meaningless conclusion to the game.

Marcus Cannon is in the game for the Patriots.

6:32 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Nifty footwork by Palko, but the Chiefs turn the ball over on downs. Green-Ellis is in the backfield for the Pats as they try to close this game out.

9:39 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: The Patriots turn it over on downs. Zoltan Mesko hangs a 50-yard punt that’s returned 26 yards. Chiefs start at New England’s 48. Maybe their best chance to score here.

10:50 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Ridiculous pass by Palko right into the hands of Phillip Adams, who holds on for the pick. Palko’s pass was intended for Steve Breaston, who was triple-covered. Patriots D taking advantage of some poor decision-making by an inexperienced quarterback.

12:02 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Antwaun Molden almost gets an interception in the end zone but drops the ball. The Chiefs keep their drive going.

13:09 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: The Chiefs have a little drive going here, and Kyle Arrington has come out of the game with a right arm injury.

13:50 4th quarter, Patriots 27-3: Mark Anderson sacks Palko for an eight-yard loss. That’s three sacks now credited to the Patriots defense.

END 3d quarter, Patriots 27-3: Green-Ellis has a field day on a nine-play, 50-yard drive, but he can’t get into the end zone, and the Patriots settle for a field goal.

4:47 3d quarter, Patriots 24-3: Palko throws a pass intended for Jonathan Baldwin that Baldwin is able to tip but can’t hang onto. The ball deflects to Kyle Arrington, who has his second interception of the night. The Patriots are taking advantage of the young Chiefs quarterback.

5:23 3d quarter, Patriots 24-3: A heavy dose of Dexter McCluster here. He’s been Kansas City’s most effective running back tonight.

9:43 3d quarter, Patriots 24-3: Kansas City turns it over on downs, and Julian Edelman returns a 56-yard punt 72 yards for a touchdown. And just like that the Patriots have blown this game open. Just like that, the Chiefs are who we thought they were.

It’s the second career punt return for a touchdown for Edelman, who shows on that play exactly what his value is on an NFL roster.

10:27 3d quarter, Patriots 17-3: Brady completes a 19-yard touchdown pass to Gronkowski to get the Patriots started off right in the second half. That play was all Gronk, straddling the sideline and jumping over the defender to make a play only he could make. It’s his 4th two-touchdown game of the season, and the sixth of his career.

Gronkowski looked a little wobbly after the play after landing awkwardly on his neck.

14:42 3d quarter, Patriots 10-3: Brady throws a 25-yard completion to Benjarvus Green-Ellis. Brady has now passed Boomer Esiason for 15th on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list.

14:42 3d quarter, Patriots 10-3: Brady throws a 25-yard completion to Benjarvus Green-Ellis. Brady has now passed Boomer Esiason for 15th on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list.

Halftime, Patriots 10-3: Brady throws a pass to Woodhead, but the ball is stripped in the end zone by linebacker Derrick Johnson for an incomplete pass. Patriots settle for a field goal after driving 51 yards in 1:51 and having a chance to get seven.

2:01 2d quarter, Patriots 7-3: Rob Ninkovich comes off the edge uncovered and hits Tyler Palko as he throws. Palko’s pass intended for Steve Breaston is picked off by Kyle Arrington and returned for 28 yards.

Pressure on Palko gives the secondary all sorts of chances to make plays, no matter how thin they are back there. If the Pats don’t get to the quarterback, turnovers won’t happen.

4:14 2d quarter, Patriots 7-3: Patriots center Dan Connelly has a groin injury. His return is questionable. Ryan Wendell is in.

4:18 2d quarter, Patriots 7-3: Brady was under pressure but throws a strike to Rob Gronkowski anyway for a 52-yard touchdown pass.

After the play, Gronkowski kindly, gently spiked the ball, though there were no defenders nearby. Gronk has 19 touchdowns in 26 career games. This was the longest of his career. Brady has now thrown a touchdown pass in 26 straight regular season games.

8:14 2d quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Thomas Jones gets what would have been a first-down run negated by a holding call, and the Chiefs turn it over on downs after a short run. Now about that offense …

9:59 2d quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Brady gets absolutely crushed by Tamba Hali and Justin Houston for a nine-yard sack. The Chiefs will get excellent field position again. Whatever the Chiefs are doing on defense, it’s working. One fan chanting “Let’s go Bruins” in stands. It’s so quiet in here that you can hear him clearly.

12:11 2d quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Mark Anderson and Andre Carter get to Palko, sacking the quarterback for an eight-yard-loss and forcing a third-and-long that the Chiefs can’t convert.

As James Sanders just tweeted, “Edelman playing defense … this is crazy.” Yup.

13:13 2d quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Palko finds Bowe for a 28-yard completion down the right sideline. That’s going to be there all game if Palko can throw that ball.

14:45 2d quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Romeo Crennel is dialing up the defense against the Pats. Brady fumbles as the Patriots were driving. Tons of pressure and defenders in the pocket. Chiefs around Brady’s feet brings back scary thoughts.

END 1st quarter, Chiefs 3-0: Not exactly how the Patriots drew it up, but they’re driving to start the second quarter.

1:29 1st quarter, Chiefs 3-0: The Chiefs attempt an onsides kick, but it hits a Chief before traveling 10 yards. The Patriots get the ball on KC’s 44-yard line.

1:30 1st quarter, Chiefs 3-0: No. 93 Andre Carter with an absolutely huge tackle on Tyler Palko to pin the Chiefs back at the 15-yard-line. Palko completes a seven-yard completion to Dwayne Bowe that falls short of the goal-line. Ryan Succop’s field goal puts the Chiefs on the board. KC goes nine plays and 45 yards on that scoring drive.

The Patriots have shown solid defense in the red zone, but they’ve given up good field position in the kicking game and have let the Chiefs move down the field otherwise.

3:44 1st quarter, 0-0: Big 26-yard run for Thomas Jones puts the Chiefs in position at the five-yard line. First and goal.

6:55 1st quarter, 0-0: Well the Patriots get their first 1st down, but Rob Gronkowski drops a pass on 3d down as the Chiefs take over. A 25-yard return puts Kansas City at their 47-yard line to start this drive.

9:43 1st quarter, 0-0: Kansas City looked like it would go for it on 4th-and-1 on the Patriots’ 36-yard line but took a delay of game. The Chiefs punt after moving the ball fairly well, using the no-huddle with some success. Let’s see what the Patriots do here on this drive, pinned inside their own 10-yard line.

James Ihedigbo has a shoulder injury. His return to the game is questionable.

12:22 1st quarter, 0-0: Patriots safety James Ihedigbo stays down on the play after a short run by KC’s Jackie Battle, but Ihedigbo runs off the field under his own power and goes straight to the locker room. Ross Ventrone comes in for New England. As you may have heard, the Patriots do not have a lot of depth at that position.

12:50 1st quarter, 0-0: Patriots go three-and-out as well on two incomplete passes and a short run. The Chiefs may not be much of an offensive threat on paper, but they’re capable of making this a game if they can keep pressuring Brady.

13:48 1st quarter, 0-0: Chiefs go three-and-out after a pass to Dexter McCluster leaves them one yard short. Julian Edelman returns a punt nine yards and the Patriots will start on their own 34-yard line.

15:00 1st quarter, 0-0: Stephen Gostkowski kicks it into the end zone and we’re underway. Chiefs will start at the 20-yard line.

Pregame: The Chiefs won the toss and have elected to receive. The Patriots will be defending the South goal.

As former Sports Illustrated hockey writer and BU professor Jack Falla used to say, we might be peaking a little early here. Nonetheless, this is your spot for game updates and for leaving your comments throughout tonight’s Monday Night Football battle between the Patriots and Chiefs. Enjoy.
