Under the rules of the new collective bargaining agreement, today is the first day that the full squad can be in full pads, and it is fully expected that will be the case at practice.
Approx. 1 p.m. – Bill Belichick press conference
1:30-4 p.m. – Patriots training camp session No. 4
A day after over 12,000 fans came to the opening day of training camp, setting a single-session attendance record, a new one was set Friday: the Patriots announced 13,654 fans were at Gillette. To clarify, the team counts not just those in the bleachers and sitting/standing on the grass, it also counts those at the Patriots Experience in the attendance figure. At any rate, an impressive number.
Yesterday was the Day of Gronk, who didn’t want to say much about the Summer of Gronk – especially how he was told enough was enough. The Education of Gronk continues, writes columnist Christopher L. Gasper.
Rob Gronkowski isn’t the only talented tight end the Patriots have – though the argument can be made if Aaron Hernandez truly is a tight end, or whether he’s becoming a receiver. He even fielded a couple of punts on Friday.
Bill Belichick praised Dont’a Hightower’s smarts yesterday, and the first-round pick has one thing figured out – he’s looking to Jerod Mayo, and has designs on making the kind of impact during his rookie season that Mayo had during his, a season in which Mayo was chosen as Defensive Rookie of the Year.
QUOTE/TWEET OF THE DAY
“I didn’t take that great of a look at it, but I wouldn’t mind being swole.”
– TE Aaron Hernandez, showing a little muscle envy when asked for his thoughts on Rob Gronkowski’s ESPN the Magazine “Body Issue” photos
AROUND THE DIVISION
The Jets have discussed having cornerback Antonio Cromartie play receiver on occasion. Ryan has been moving players around in an effort to create “hidden depth”. There’s a joke in here about Cromartie doing whatever he’s asked to keep a job and keep up with child support payments, but we won’t make it.
Remember yesterday, when we talked about the Dolphins having three quarterbacks and perhaps, according to the old adage, really not having any? Well for now they’re at two anyway, since they still can’t come to a contract agreement with first-rounder Ryan Tannehill.
The Bills’ success likely rests on the shoulders of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (hey, have you heard he went to Harvard and got a perfect score on the Wonderlic? No? Where ya been the last few years?), who struggled late last season and is focused on his mechanics as one way to up the level of his play.
