FOXBOROUGH — The fraternity of NFL coaches came out in full force to show support for Andy Reid at the funeral for his oldest son Garrett this morning in Pennsylvania. The Patriots and Saints reworked their scheduled joint practice so a group of coaches, including Saints acting head coach Joe Vitt and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo could attend along with Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Belichick, who is close friends with Reid, was solemn as he talked about the morning with the media.
“I’s kind of a heavy heart today with going to Garrett Reid’s services and seeing Andy. The Saints, Mr. Benson, were generous enough to let me go down there with them on their plane this morning. I’m just glad I had an opportunity to be there and see Andy and his family and the Eagles organization. I have a lot of respect for them and what they do as well. They’re great friends and my heart goes out to him and our team does to the Eagles.
At the end of practice the two teams huddled on the field to pray for the Reid family. Several of the coaches who worked with Reid came out, including John Harbaugh and Mike Holmgren. “That was special for us,” Spagnuolo said. “I know that and and his wife Tammy, they appreciated it. There was tremendous support down there. This family, I’m talking about this NFL football family, it’s a family.”
