Patriots Daily Briefing, 8.9.12

Good morning. Here is your PDB for Thursday, August 9, 2012. It contains all the links, info, analysis and occasional humor that you’ll need to start your day. If you can’t detect sarcasm or take yourself and/or football too seriously, this may not be your thing.

7:30 p.m.: Preseason game No. 1 – vs. New Orleans Saints

No practice
Approx. 4 p.m.: Bill Belichick conference call

Colleague Greg Bedard has a pre-emptive strike for those of you who are nervous about the status of the Patriots’ offensive line: it may not look good now, but once September comes, it will be fine.

Defensive tackle Kyle Love has always searched for motivation, writes Julian Benbow, but come December he’ll have the biggest motivator of all: his wife is expecting their first child.

The Patriots notebook has Drew Brees calling Tom Brady one of the best ever, and former Ravens offensive lineman Ben Grubbs, now with the Saints, remembering his last trip to Gillette, in the AFC title game.

So @WesWelker HAD the lowest body fat % on the team until I slightly dethroned him by .2% at 4.1… What was your excuse again Wesley??
– Pats receiver Donte’ Stallworth on Twitter; players had to take a body fat composition test this week. Stallworth later tweeted that some players hadn’t yet taken the test, and he feared Kyle Arrington’s would be even lower

At Jets camp yesterday, Rex Ryan has already made a decision in the competition at left guard, choosing Matt Slauson over former UMass player Vladimir Ducasse. Also big news yesterday in Cortland: Tim Tebow got a whole two snaps with the first-team offense, and it resulted in a long touchdown.

The Bills are also having some competition on the offensive line, at left tackle. An injury to right tackle Erik Pears means Chris Hairston, who is supposed to be battling with rookie Cordy Glenn for the left tackle spot, is taking snaps on the opposite end of the line.

Sticking with the offensive line theme, just moments into the opening episode of Hard Knocks with the Dolphins you see Derek Dennis get cut – the same Derek Dennis the Patriots signed just a few days later.
