A night of firsts for Alex Silvestro

The Patriots signed Alex Silvestro as an undrafted free agent defensive end last year. Monday night against the Eagles, Silvestro caught his first pass in a Patriots uniform as a tight end and then made another in the next series. The latter was a touchdown, the lone Patriots TD in the 27-17 loss.

“Yeah it was a little nerves on that,” said Silvestro on catching the touchdown. “Actually the first [catch] was a little bit worse because it felt like the ball was slower.”

Quarterback Ryan Mallett credited Silvestro for getting open.

“I was looking over there to begin with,” Mallet said, “and he beat the linebacker and the corner left, so I gave him a ball and he made me look good.”

Silvestro hadn’t played tight end since high school.

“I feel like every day I’m getting a little bit better,” he said. “I’m just trying to develop and listen to whatever the coaches tell me to do.”

His two catches Monday totaled 18 yards.

Bill Belichick’s opening statement at the podium…
“We got to look at a lot of players tonight, evaluate them against a good football team and we’ll take a look at the film and correct our mistakes, build on it. We’ve got a quick turnaround this week with Tampa. These are the days that we can, as a team, really learn from a lot of these experiences, game situations, training camp practices and so forth, to make our team better, so that’s what we’re going to do. It was some good experience for us out there tonight. Some good situations came up. We played against a good team and I thought we competed hard. Obviously we didn’t make enough plays to win, but there are some things to build on there and obviously a lot of things to correct.”

Defensive end Chandler Jones on the front seven…
“We’ve become more of a brotherhood. Not that the whole defense isn’t close, but we have a great bond. We can rely on each other, and that’s what you need to have a great defense.”

Defensive back Nate Ebner on his interception to end the second half…
“It was just instinct, and practice. The ball is in the air, gotta make a play on it, and I did. Just doing what I practice.”

Wide receiver Deion Branch on having a short week of preparation for a game on Friday…
“We’ll find out tomorrow how it feels. Guys are going to be bruised up pretty bad. But this is part of the game. It’s football. This is the schedule that was given to us and we have to go out there and do it. It will be a quick turnaround. I think once we get on the field, that’s when guys will feel more in their realm. All the traveling and stuff might throw us off a little bit but I think we’ll go out and be OK.”

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles on the team’s reaction following the Vick injury…
“Michael Vick’s the leader of this team. He’s a tremendous quarterback and a tremendous leader. They were very confident when I stepped in because those guys have been together and they know I’m going to go out there and play as hard as I can for them. The line did a great job protecting and our receivers did a great job getting open so my job was really just to stay in rhythm and get the ball to our players.”
