Tom Brady can keep a secret. Wes Welker apparently cannot.

When the CBS cameras captured Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cursing on the sidelines in Buffalo on Sunday — uttering the words “[expletive] you, [expletive]” with Wes Welker seated beside him — speculation ran amok that the wrath of Brady’s saucy soundbite was probably select Bills defensive players, Buffalo fans, or even the newly-returning referees.

Welker cleared all that up today when he revealed the true targets of Brady’s outburst.

“I think it was kind of directed at, towards me and Deion [Branch] a little bit,” Welker said today on WEEI’s Mut and Merloni show. “We were giving him a hard time that his knee was down and we didn’t know what he was doing on the bench over there. He better get his butt up and get back out on the field because his knee was down and so he’s like, ‘what are you talking about, I was in.’ So I think they caught him at a perfect moment where we were just kind of just jawing back and forth and things like that.”

During his weekly appearance on WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan show on Monday, Brady shed little light on the moment.

“I’d rather not say,” was Brady’s response when asked whom the vulgarity was directed toward. “It wasn’t the fans and it wasn’t the refs or anything like that,” said Brady. “It was an emotional thing. I was just fired up.”
