More details emerged about Darrelle Revis’ contract with the New England Patriots Thursday after the cornerback officially signed with the team. According to USA Today’s Tom Pelissero, Revis’ $12 million deal for 2014 includes a $10 million signing bonus, $1.5 million salary, and $500,000 in bonuses.
The Patriots also hold a team option on Revis for 2015 worth a total of $20 million in salary and bonuses.
In essence, it seems like the Patriots get Revis at a two-year deal under their control for $32 million, the same amount he would have made under his deal in Tampa Bay before the Buccaneers released him on Wednesday. However, according to the NFL Network’s Albert Breer, his cap number would be around $25 million next season. Revis will only count $7 million toward the cap in 2014.
The 2015 option also eliminated the possibility of the Patriots using the franchise tag on Revis. There is also the possibility that the two sides will work out a more Patriots-friendly long-term deal after the season in lieu of Revis’ $20 million price tag.
