Patriots Drop TE D.J. Williams, DT Marcus Forston

The Patriots released TE D.J. Williams and defensive tackle Marcus Forston, getting a jumpstart on the trimming process ahead of Tuesday’s mandatory cuts to 75-man rosters.

Williams’s release represents another hollow spot on the team’s roster for tight ends. Along with the release of Ben Hartsock earlier in the week, the Patriots had also dropped Asa Watson and waived Terrence Miller with an injury designation before he was converted to injured reserve. The brought back Justin Jones after releasing him a week prior.

With Williams off the roster, the Patriots now have Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, Steve Maneri, and Jones heading into the team’s third preseason game. Gronkowski and Hoomanawanui are both getting acclimated for game action after suffering injuries. Williams had been rehabbing from a leg injury he suffered in joint practices with Washington.

Forston’s release leaves the Patriots with 10 defensive tackles. He had not played well in the preseason and in training camp after spending two seasons with the team on and off the practice squad. He has appeared in four games for the Patriots and recorded three total tackles.
