FOXBOROUGH — Tom Brady threw a 40-yard touchdown to Shane Vereen and Stephen Gostkowski kicked two field goals as the Patriots took a 13-0 lead over the Panthers in the first half of Friday’s preseason game at Gillette Stadium.

Brady was an efficient 13 of 17 passing for 140 yards. His favorite target was Julian Edelman, who caught six passes for 46 yards.

The defense showed spark for the Patriots in the first half, too. Chandler Jones had two sacks on Cam Newton and Rob Ninkovich added another. Jones has a team-leading six tackles as well.

Gostkowski nailed a 60-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the second quarter, the longest of his career. He hit a 47-yard attempt in the first quarter.
