Sloppy win for Seminoles

EJ Manuel threw for 229 yards, Devonta Freeman ran for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, and No. 12 Florida State overcame a shaky start to beat host Miami, 33-20, on Saturday night, the Seminoles’ third straight win over their archrival.

Manuel completed 21 of 31 passes for Florida State (7-1, 4-1), which won despite 12 penalties and five fumbles, two of them lost. Dustin Hopkins kicked four field goals for the Seminoles, and James Wilder added a touchdown run.

Stephen Morris threw for 223 yards and a late touchdown for Miami (4-4, 3-2), which has lost three straight but controls its Coastal Division destiny.

Clemson 38, Virginia Tech 17 —Tajh Boyd ran for two touchdowns and passed for another, and Jonathan Meeks added a 74-yard interception return for a score as the No. 14 Tigers won their third straight, beating the visiting Hokies.


Clemson (6-1, 3-1) finished with three interceptions and twice stopped fourth-down attempts to end drives by the Hokies (4-4, 2-2).

Clemson tied a school record with its 11th straight home win.

Duke 33, North Carolina 30 — In Durham, N.C., Sean Renfree’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder on fourth down with 13 seconds left lifted the Blue Devils (6-2, 3-1) past the Tar Heels (5-3, 2-2), making Duke bowl eligible for the first time since 1994.

It was the first Duke win against the Tar Heels since 2003.

N.C. State 20, Maryland 18 — Mike Glennon directed a drive to set up a 43-yard field goal by Niklas Sade with 32 seconds left, and the visiting Wolfpack (5-2, 2-1) won after Maryland (4-3, 2-1) missed a field goal with two seconds left.

Wake Forest 16, Virginia 10 — At Charlottesville, Va., Chad Hedlund had three field goals and the Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-3) handed the Cavaliers (2-6, 0-4) their sixth straight loss.
