Craig “CJ’’ Parsons, a 22-year-old senior at Boston College who was a tight end on the school’s 2013 football team, and 23-year-old Anthony Varrichione, a former Marist College quarterback, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a January attack on a homeless man in Allston.
According to a Globe story, the two men allegedly attacked 50-year-old Michael Hudson on Allston St. on January 26. Hudson had been homeless for most of his life but had recently secured housing in the neighborhood where the attack occurred. Around 2 a.m., according to the Globe, prosecutors allege that Hudson was asking for food and money on Allston street when a “verbal confrontation’’ broke out between him and the two former football players. Parsons and Varrichione asked Hudson to leave, and when he refused, prosecuters allege the pair began physically assaulting him. From the Globe:
"The attack was interrupted when a female pedestrian ran to [the victim's] aid and covered his body with her own. This witness reported that one of the two assailants attempted to spit on Mr. Hudson as she lay on top of him," prosecutors wrote. "Additional witnesses came to Mr. Hudson's aid and both Parsons and Varrichione fled the area."
The pair are facing charges of battery causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious injury. Hudson was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in critical condition. He remained hospitalized there for three days and “has no memory of the incident,’’ a hospital spokesman told the Globe.
Varrichione’s attorney told the Globe he expects his client to be vindicated. He also said that Varrichione and Parsons know each other from their years at Westwood Catholic High School. Parsons, listed as 6-feet-6 inches, 265 pounds on BC’s website, played and started in all 13 games for the Eagles in 2013. He caught a career-high two touchdown passes in a game vs. Florida State on Sept. 28. Varrichione saw action in 11 games in 2011, serving primarily on special teams and also as a backup quarterback.
