Patriots cut Sterling Moore, sign Mike Rivera and Derrick Martin

The Patriots waived defensive back Sterling Moore on Wednesday, and re-signed linebacker Mike Rivera and defensive back Derrick Martin.

Moore, 22, appeared in 14 regular-season games for the Patriots after being signed off the Raiders’ practice squad Oct. 5, 2011. He was named NFL Rookie of the Week for his two-interception performance against the Bills in Week 17, and played in all three playoff games, including the Super Bowl. He had a limited role this season behind Ras-I Dowling and Alfonzo Dennard, the primary backups to Devin McCourty and Kyle Arrington.

Rivera, who had started this season on the Patriots’ 53-man roster before being released Sept. 19, was signed by the Dolphins the following week, before being released Oct. 3.

Martin originally signed with the Patriots Aug. 4, but was released after training camp.

The Patriots also terminated the contract of practice squad tight end Alex Silvestro.
