What the Broncos are saying about the Patriots this week

The Broncos will be battling for their playoff lives this weekend.

After a surprising loss to Tennessee this past Sunday, the reigning Super Bowl champion Broncos are 8-5 this year. Trevor Siemian is the new man under-center, filling the shoes of future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and the departed Brock Osweiler. But the defense remains largely intact, and quite potent, with Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware bringing pass-rushing heat off the end while Chris Harris, Aqib Talib, and T.J. Ward lock down the coverage.

Despite a faltering offense, Denver is never an easy place to play and the Patriots should have another big test on their hands this weekend. Here’s what the Broncos are saying this week:

Head coach Gary Kubiak

  • On Tom Brady:“I think he’s exceptional right now. He’s been on a mission since he’s come back. Obviously he missed a month. That’s hard on players. You can just see how driven he is. I was listening to the game on Monday and he said that he might play until he’s 45. There’s no doubt that I believe he can. He’s exceptional. I have great respect for what he’s doing and how he’s doing it right now. They’re really good. They’re running the ball extremely well, too.”
  • On the Patriots running backs: “That’s been very impressive to me, how they’ve run the ball. Their back [Blount] is exceptional. They’re good up front. You see them in the middle of the game getting two-tights and three-tights, whatever they have to do to line up and push the ball at you…I think that’s part of what they do. They’ve done it over the years, I just think they’re doing it a little bit more right now and doing it very well.”
  • On the defense:“They don’t give up big plays. They’re very good on the back end. They can lock you up. They’re a very physical group with their edge players and what they do. They’re playing a lot of people, too. A lot of people are coming on and off the field. It’s very difficult to diagnose and being able to get your guys on the same page of what’s actually happening out there. That’s something that they’ve always done and that’s always been a challenge.”

Former Patriots cornerback Aqib Talib:

  • On the Patriots offense: “They have so many weapons. It’s like they have five different offenses that they can run. ‘Gronk is down, OK, let’s just run the next offense.’ They’ll be alright.”
  • On this week’s game:“We’re playing a Hall of Fame quarterback and a Hall of Fame coach. Its ‘see-where-you’re-at’ week. You’re playing the best [and] you have to love to play the best, right?”

Quarterback Trevor Siemian

  • On the Patriots defense: “Really good players, a great scheme, [and] obviously really well coached. They compete really hard. That’s the one thing that you see on tape. Everything is contested. Every yard you have to earn. It’s a credit to them. They’re a great team and definitely a great defense.”
  • On Tom Brady:“I remember watching a couple of the Super Bowls. They played the Rams, I remember that one, but he’s obviously has been doing it a long time at a really high level. One of those guys that you like watching play and you like watching him compete. He does it the right way, no doubt.”
