Amid the Patriots’ dominant 43-0 win over the Dolphins on Sunday, one player experienced some conspicuous struggles.

Stephen Gostkowski, New England’s kicker since 2006 and all-time leading scorer, missed a 48-yard field goal as well as two extra point attempts. With those misses, it already surpasses the number of extra points the 35-year-old missed all of last season.

In the aftermath of an otherwise emphatic victory, Gostkowski was blunt about his lackluster performance.

“I stunk today,” Gostkowski said to Kevin Duffy of The Boston Herald. “Not my day. It was pretty terrible on my part. Today just sucked.”

During the game, Gostkowski — who has been with the Patriots through three Super Bowl wins — was given encouragement by linebacker Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy. The experienced kicker explained that he intends to persevere.

“Every year has different challenges and different ways you feel,” Gostkowski told Duffy. “You do the best you can with what you’ve got. And this hasn’t been the best start, but I’m not going to throw in the towel.”
