What Bill Belichick had to say about the Patriots’ game-winning interception

Since returning to the Patriots in the offseason, linebacker Jamie Collins has excelled by following some straightforward instructions from the team’s coaching staff.

“Whatever we’ve asked him to do, he’s done a great job,” said Bill Belichick.

That capacity was on display throughout the Patriots’ 16-10 road win against the Bills on Sunday, and it was highlighted in the game’s defining play. With the Bills attempting to drive for a game-winning touchdown, Collins hauled in the interception that sealed the victory for New England.

“Didn’t look like that ball was ever going to come down on the last interception,” said Belichick of Collins’s play. “He almost fair caught it, and made the play. Jamie’s been doing a great job for us all year.”

Collins now has 3.5 sacks and three interceptions on the season. And since Dont’a Hightower was on the team’s inactive list against the Bills, it also left Collins with an additional role.

“With [Hightower] out, he took over the signal caller responsibilities,” Belichick added.

On the play that ended with Collins cradling his interception, the Bills failed to block only four Patriots pass rushers. Asked about exactly how New England linebacker Kyle Van Noy got to Buffalo quarterback Matt Barkley (in for the injured Josh Allen), Belichick noted how a mixing of blitzes on previous plays might have played a role.

“We had blitzed a couple plays earlier,” said Belichick. “I’m not really sure what happened on the protection, whether it was a hot throw or they thought that someone was coming and they didn’t come. You’d have to ask them. I’d say probably it was the disguise and having everybody up there. Like I said, we had blitzed on first and second down, so this time we backed out of it and I don’t know they might have made a mistake in protection, I’m not sure.”
