Adam Schefter says Bill Belichick’s contract extension won’t affect his future with Patriots

On Sunday, hours before the Patriots beat the Bills for their first home win of the season, reports of a “lucrative” multi-year Bill Belichick contract extension surfaced.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport was first with the news.

However, Belichick’s reported new deal won’t affect his future with the Patriots, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“He always keeps details of his deals very private,” Schefter said during an appearance on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show. “Details of his deal never get out and I don’t believe a deal now has any bearing on his future going forward. I really don’t. I think him and Robert Kraft will sit down at the end of the year and make a decision mutually about what they each want to do whether he has an extension or not.”

The Patriots are 2-5. Both wins have come against AFC East opponents. New England, despite its rocky start, is 2-1 in division play. The way the Patriots perform down the stretch is more likely to affect the conversations between Kraft and Belichick than the extension, Schefter said.

“I don’t care if Bill Belichick has a year left, three years left, five years left, it doesn’t matter,” Schefter said. “To me, they’re going to assess that situation on a year-to-year basis and figure out what’s best for the both of them.”
