Martha’s Vineyard shuts out Nantucket to win 35th Island Cup

Sophomore Jacob Cardoza scored every point, all in the first quarter and Martha’s Vineyard defeated Nantucket, 14-0, Saturday afternoon to capture the 35th Island Cup and take an 18-17 edge in the series.

The Vineyard has now won 10 years in a row and 17 of the last 25 to take its first lead in the series. When coach Donald Herman took over the Vineyard’s program in 1988, Nantucket led the series, 9-1.

“It was a great effort by our entire team,” said Herman. “I thought they played very well in adverse conditions today. Just playing on Nantucket can be a daunting task.”

Neither the two-hour boat ride nor the stadium packed with Nantucket fans fazed the Vineyarders.
