The New England Revolution added reinforcement to the team’s defense on Friday. Michael Mancienne was signed on a free transfer from English club Nottingham Forrest. The team used Targeted Allocation Money to make a move for the English defender.

The 30-year-old has been primarily used as a central defender, and could play for the Revs in such a capacity. He is also capable as a full back and defensive midfielder.

Mancienne, who stands six feet tall, played with Forest in the English Football League Championship for four seasons, and emerged as a professional out of Chelsea’s youth system. He made his professional debut with Chelsea, even earning an appearance in the knockout round of the 2009 UEFA Champions League.

Yet Mancienne couldn’t carve out a place for himself, instead finding time on loans to Queens Park Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 2011, he switched to the German Bundesliga, signing with Hamburg. In 2014, Mancienne moved back to England to sign with Forrest.

The Revs alluded to Mancienne’s arrival in a series of teases over the past week. Prior to the announcement, the team’s Twitter account had some fun, first giving a two-minute warning:

This was followed up with a joking GIF shortly before the formal announcement was made:

Mancienne appeared to have fallen out of Forrest manager Aitor Karanka’s plans. Karanka acknowledged his hope for Mancienne to find a new club during preseason.

“If Michael finds a good team, I will be happy for him,” Karanka told Nottingham media in mid July. “He has been in Nottingham for a few years and I will be happy if he finds a good move for him.”

As for the Revs, the 30-year-old expressed his excitement to join the club.

“It was something that I couldn’t turn down,” said Mancienne. “I had obviously other options in England, but to be honest this was something that was amazing. I think it’s beautiful.”
