The Ivy League is adding men’s and women’s conference tournaments for the 2017 season that will determine the conference’s automatic berths for the NCAA Tournament.

The Ivy League had traditionally sent its regular season champion to the tournament.

The 2017 tournament for men and women will be held March 11 and 12 at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The Palestra is the on-campus home for Ivy League team Penn.

Only the top-four teams in the standings will advance to the tournament.

Yale won for men and Penn the women this season under the traditional round-robin format.

Robin Harris, the conference’s executive director, says the format of the tournament lets the league preserve its significance of the regular season while giving athletes and fans something to anticipate.
