In March, with the full ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic becoming clear, Boston-area gyms closed their doors along with numerous other businesses and gathering places.
Months later, with Massachusetts entering Phase 3 of its reopening, gyms are cautiously beginning to reopen. For those who have missed in-person workouts, they will quickly get a glimpse at how different things will be in the era of COVID-19.
While the rest of the state allowed gyms to start up again on July 6, those located in Boston and Somerville have to wait until July 13. Both cities have delayed moving ahead with each new phase by a week due to having more dense populations.
For those who venture back to gyms, they will have to follow state-mandated health standards aimed at minimizing groups and achieving social distancing.
Only 40 percent of a gym’s maximum occupancy is allowed, and a rigorous hygiene checklist must be met at all times. Fitness classes that normally include more than 30 participants will be cut down to potentially fewer than 10 to help with spacing.
Many gyms are requiring customers to schedule a time to workout in advance. In addition, face masks are a requirement, though there are exceptions for customers “during strenuous fitness activities.” When unable to wear a face mask, social distancing requirements extend from six to 14 feet.
