Welcome to Boston.com’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through Twitter, Facebook, and email.
He’ll pick one each weekday to answer, then we’ll take the discussion to the comments. Chad will stop by several times per day to navigate. But you drive the conversation.
This is a great question. There are so many to choose from, and the answer is probably somewhat dependent on what your favorite sports happens to be.
My guess is that the 2004 Red Sox would get the most overall votes — when you’re the team that ends an 86-year curse, you tend to stay in fans’ good graces pretty much forever, even if some of the players end up taking dubious paths afterward.
But if you’re more of a Patriots fan, it’s pretty tough to put anything above the 2001 Patriots, when a dynasty was born. If you’re a Celtics fan of a certain age, the ’86 Celtics are probably your favorite. The Bruins? It’s gotta be one of the big, bad Cup champions from 1970 and ’72.
For me? Geez, this is tough. I think I have to go ’04 Red Sox, because that changed everything. I’d waited my whole life to see it, something that could also be said for previous generations. Plus, the script was perfect. Coming back from an 0-3 hole against the Yankees? C’mon. That’s how you exorcise ghosts
It’s tough not to pick the ’86 Celtics. I wish NBC Sports Boston or NBA TV would air every game from that entire season from beginning to end. But they’re second. It’s gotta be the ’04 Sox here.
My top five:
5. ’78 Red Sox (my first as a fan. Yes, I remember the ending.)
4. ’81 Celtics
3. ’01 Patriots
2. ‘’86 Celtics
1. ’04 Red Sox
But that does everyone else think? What is your favorite single season by a Boston sports team? I’ll hear you in the comments.
