Welcome to’s Sports Q, our daily conversation, initiated by you and moderated by Chad Finn, about a compelling topic in Boston sports. Here’s how it works: You submit questions to Chad through TwitterFacebook, and email. He’ll pick one each weekday to answer, then we’ll take the discussion to the comments. Chad will stop by several times per day to navigate. But you drive the conversation.

Starting to look like the Celtics might have to give up Marcus Smart to get a player like John Collins or Aaron Gordon. Cool with that? — Tim R.

Yeah, I saw The Athletic report that the Hawks have some interest in getting him in a deal that would bring Collins to Boston. Man, that’s a tough one. Smart is one of my favorite Celtics players in years. His methods aren’t always ideal – his shot selection has been especially poor lately – but his intentions are always good. He just wants to win. They need more like him.

The Celtics deeply missed him when he was out for six weeks with the calf injury – not just the defensive intensity, but his underrated playmaking. He’s the best passer among their wings and ballhandlers. If they trade him in a package for a player who wants shots like Collins or Gordon, I’m not sure it solves any of their issues. This is a team that needs more capable and willing passers, not fewer.

But I also realize they’re going to have to give up something to get something, and Smart is one of the few players that the Celtics could reasonably consider trading who also would appeal to the trade partners. The Hawks and Magic (and throw the Kings in this conversation too, with Harrison Barnes) aren’t coveting Carsen Edwards and Grant Williams, you know?

I could see doing it if they could lock up Collins long term. And Smart hasn’t been quite the defensive force this year that he has been in previous years. But I really hope it doesn’t happen. You thought trading Kendrick Perkins in 2012 cut the heart out of the Celtics? Just wait until you see what trading Smart will do. No, not cool with that.

But what does everyone else think? Would you trade Marcus Smart in a package for Collins or Gordon? I’ll hear you in the comments.
