Tim Thomas allowed two goals last night in Buffalo. He had allowed three all season heading into the game.
Obviously, we’re kidding, but not really. After all, the Bruins are going to need to see a healthy dose of their young goalie over the next month, when the Bruins start, you know, playing some hockey. I get that their reward for heading over to Prague to start the season was a laid-back schedule for much of October, but it seems they’re on TV about as much as Andy Rooney each week.
That’s about to change significantly, as the Bruins begin a brutal stretch of contests that begins tomorrow night against Washington (again). For the remainder of the month, the Bruins have games on Nov. 5, 6, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28.
That’s 13 games over 26 days. They played a mere seven in 21 days since returning from Prague.
We haven?t seen Rask in net since Oct.23, when he allowed three goals to the Rangers in a 3-2 loss. Rask has yet to win this season. Thomas has yet to lose.
We’ve learned a little something about getting too excited about the Bruins too early…or really, really late if you know what I’m getting at. Still, if the Bruins get through this stretch playing the way they have so far this season, that’s going to be difficult not to do. As long as Rask is anything close to what he was in the second half last season, the Bruins at best have a 1-2 goaltending punch that can’t be matched. At worst, Thomas might be able to net you a puck-moving defenseman down the line. The way he’s playing makes it a lot easier for someone else to absorb that salary. I say get them all hip surgery.
The Bruins are fourth in goals per game with 3.22. No, really. They’re first in goals allowed per game with 1.44. Last night, Thomas’ GAA rocketed to 0.80.That’s the worst news, I suppose.
I mean, good God, Blake Wheeler scored last night.
Yes, things are going pretty well for the Bruins right now. Of course, they were going pretty well heading into overtime on May 7 too.
Still, there’s something happening. There is, right? Maybe. I’m reserving expectations.
But they’re making that difficult.
