It was a day for milestones in Winchester.
Senior Megan Hennessey broke the Sachems’ career scoring record with a four-goal, four-assist performance, and the 17-5 lacrosse victory over Belmont marked coach Suzanne Ontso’s 300th win.
Hennessey passed Lauren Sullivan for the points mark with 333, and her 117 assists pushes her ahead of Katie Brooks for the program’s all-time lead.
Brooks graduated in 2004 and went on to play at the University of North Carolina and then with the Canadian national team. Hennessey is second in career goals behind former teammate Sullivan, who graduated in 2010 and now plays at Notre Dame.
Ontso is in her 19th season as varsity coach at Winchester and says that Hennessey “could very well be our best player ever.
“Finishing with four goals and four assists today is the perfect way to describe her as a player — balanced.’’
Hennessey didn’t realize she had claimed the record until hours after the game because Ontso kept the milestones secret in an effort to minimize the pressure.
“I’m really excited,’’ Hennessey said. “It’s a real honor to be up there with Katie and Lauren.’’
Hennessey is also an All-Scholastic soccer player, but has committed to play lacrosse for Harvard.
“Lacrosse is my passion,’’ she said. “I can’t wait to play at the next level.’’
