Billerica came into its home game with Chelmsford Monday riding high at 8-0, but the Lions put an end to the unbeaten start, putting together a nine-run third inning in a 14-6 victory.
Indians starter Robby Gambale racked up five strikeouts in the first two innings and had the Lions on their heels. No. 3 Billerica was able to score the first run but it was all No. 18 Chelmsford from the third inning on.
“The first two innings our strike zone was enormous. We were up there swinging at everything [Gambale] threw so we were helping him more than we thought. He’s a really good pitcher,’’ said Chelmsford coach Michael O’Keefe.
Mike DeDonato led the charge for the Lions in the top of the third, batting twice in the inning and driving in three runs on a double and triple. Matt Rabito contributed with and RBI triple. The Lions drove Gambale out of the game after just 2⅔ innings.
“It was a big inning obviously,’’ O’Keefe said. “We swung the bats very well; about the best we’ve swung the bats all year in that inning. We struggled the first two innings and changed our approach just a little bit and narrowed our focus. The kids deserve all the credit.’’
Chelmsford starter Quinn Cooney pitched 5⅓ innings,
allowing three earned runs.
“He did a really nice job. He always gives us a great outing,’’ O’Keefe said.
