When a trip to the World Cup final is on the line, you’ve got to give it your all. But even with that as a steadfast rule, Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano probably gave a little more than he wanted to in the team’s semi-final win over Netherlands.
Italian reporter Tancredi Palmeri tweeted a rough translation from Mascherano’s post-game press conference and it sounds like a successful tackle on Netherlands forward Arjen Robben was not successful in every way.
Some unforgettable words from Mascherano: "I spread out my anus in that last tackle, that's why I felt so much pain"— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) July 10, 2014
If the translation doesn’t make total sense, let us be clear: Mascherano tore his anus.
It’s a cringe-inducing injury that you probably didn’t even realize was possible, but there you have it.
According to a report on the injury from Yahoo! Sports, Mascherano “doubled over in pain after making the tackle.’’ That seems fair.
The injury came after Mascherano appeared to hit his head and suffer a concussion in the game’s first half. FIFA has come under fire for it’s apparent lax regulations for concussed athletes, but no standards have really been set and Mascherano was allowed to stay in the game.
Argentina will face Germany in the World Cup Final on Sunday at 3 p.m. It’s unclear if Mascherano will be healthy enough to play.
