Chism to serve at least 40 years in prison for teacher’s murder
December 14: Philip Chism, photographed in Salem Superior Court, was convicted in the rape and murder of his math teacher, Colleen Ritzer. For the murder charge, Chism will be sentenced automatically to life, with parole after either 15 or 25 years. Two years ago, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court struck down life sentences without parole for juveniles.
