The 1993 award winning science fiction novel, “Parable of the Sower,” by Octavia E. Butler, is the inspiration for the opera presented by ArtsEmerson resident artist Toshi Reagon. The production, a collaboration from the mother-daughter creative team Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon and directed by Eric Ting, transcends the traditional through a lens of Afrofuturism and delivers a musical experience revered as “genre defying.” “Parable of the Sower” tells the story of Lauren Olamina and her journey as a young woman through an alternate reality facing the dire consequences of climate change. Group tickets are available for the show which is a perfect opportunity to engage youth, social clubs, community centers, and more.
While the opera will only run shows from April 21 through 24, the production is a part of a larger initiative for artistic engagement and community organizing through Parable Path Boston, Reagon’s year-long artist residency at Emerson College. This program is rooted in the foundational principles of Butler’s literary work and will include community-led activities tackling climate justice in Boston.
