BC-BU set to renew college hockey’s best rivalry

Neither is off to a stellar start this season, leaving the Eagles and Terriers battling to make up ground in Hockey East.

When college rivals meet, it’s sometimes said we can throw the records out the window.

The men’s hockey teams from Boston College and Boston University might be OK with that this season.

As the college hockey calendar flipped ahead to December, there were six New England teams ranked ahead of either school in the USCHO national poll — including both of the other Beanpot participants. BC ranked 20th, while BU wasn’t even receiving votes after a 4-9-2 start to the season.

The Terriers won just once in November, though that came against reigning national champion UMass, and they hung tough in a number of other games against nationally ranked opponents. The Eagles, on the other hand, were stuck in a win-one, lose-one pattern before COVID issues forced the postponement of the two contests that were supposed to close out the month.

The disappointing starts for both sides add even more importance to the 285th edition of the Green Line Rivalry, considering both sides are playing catch up, and could use every available point in the forthcoming races for Hockey East playoff positions and the NCAA Tournament. That should ratchet up the intensity before the teams head off to their respective holiday breaks — and as can be expected any time these teams meet, there promises to be a significant amount of pro talent on the ice.

Jerry York’s BC roster includes 10 NHL draft picks, notably sophomore forward Trevor Kuntar, a third-round pick of the Bruins in 2020. Albie O’Connell’s BU squad features 14 players who’ve been drafted, including a pair of first-round forwards: Jay O’Brien (Philadelphia, 2018) and Tyler Boucher (Ottawa, 2021).
