Note: As a result of the late-January blizzard, this event has been rescheduled for Feb. 5.
The Celtics will lend their court to a collection of high school talent from around the area on Feb. 5, with 20 teams taking the parquet over the course of more than 14 hours in support of the Andrew James Lawson Foundation.
Andrew was a 2008 graduate of Norwell High School who had Down Syndrome, and in whose memory a foundation was established to help others with intellectual and development disabilities experience inclusion in their communities. Later inducted into the high school’s athletic hall of fame, Andrew was a three-sport athlete and attended public schools from pre-K through graduation, and was also honored by the Celtics’ Heroes Among Us program and the Massachusetts Special Olympics. He died in 2018 after a two-year battle with cancer.
This year’s invitational tips off at 7:15 a.m., with a contest between the Unified teams of Hingham and Weymouth. At 8:30, the girls’ teams from Malden Catholic and Cardinal Spellman compete, and from there another game starts every 90 minutes until Revere and Hamilton-Wenham go head to head at 8:30 p.m.
The event was originally scheduled for Jan. 16, then rescheduled for Jan. 30 because of COVID concerns, but then again rescheduled due to weather. The foundation says the slate of games has not changed, however.
General admission tickets are $20 through the athletic departments of each individual school that’s competing. They can also be purchased through Ticketmaster – but be aware that the $20 ticket costs $37.55 apiece after fees. If you’re willing to spend that to see the games, the extra $17.55 per seat may be better spent as a donation to the Andrew James Lawson Foundation.
