Provincetown Carnival returns to the Cape

Pool parties, drag shows, and the famous parade celebrate this year's theme of "Monsters, Myths & Legends."

One of the largest outdoor celebrations in Massachusetts and Provincetown’s original summer celebration is back after a two-year hiatus. During the week-long LGBTQ celebration, carnival-goers enjoy and express themselves at costume parties, live entertainment, pool parties, drag brunches, and more. With this year’s theme of “Monsters, Myths & Legends,” the week kicks off with an opening dance party with Miss Swamp Thang and DJ James Anthony on Aug. 14 at the Crown & Anchor, and continues with parties and dances galore around town. The 44th annual famous Carnival Parade also returns on Aug. 18 with Mx Justin Vivian Bond as grand marshal, following Bond’s special one-night only show “Oh Mary, It’s Carnival Week!” at Provincetown Town Hall the night before. New this year to the festival is the Feet Over Front Street 5K—Carnival Run & Walk, paying homage to the original name of Provincetown’s main street (formally Front is now Commercial).
