For years, the domain of popular holiday music has been populated by the likes of artists who have been dead and gone for decades. Think Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland and the like. Sure, there are outliers like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” but I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn when I say you don’t hear much holiday music created by contemporary artists around the holiday season.
Hiss Golden Messenger–the indie folk brainchild of MC Taylor–aims to change that. His (Hiss?) latest release, O Come All Ye Faithful, is described by Merge Records as “a seasonal record with vibe, featuring originals, covers, and standards.” I listened to the track “Grace,” and it vibes for sure, with smooth, country-tinged soul.
So won’t it be festive to see and hear some holiday songs, new and old, performed live early on in the holiday season. Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Rosali supports.
