New England’s beach towns, often lauded during summer months, can be outstanding places to visit during winter months, too. In fact, Coastal Living magazine has slated Nantucket, Ogunquit, Maine, and Newport, Rhode Island on its list of the 10 best beach towns for Christmas.
Nantucket snagged a place on the list due, in part, to its annual Christmas Stroll, which has brought Christmas cheer to the island during the first weekend in December for more than 40 years. The downtown celebration involves hundreds of decorated Christmas trees, costumed carolers, live entertainment, and craft shows, and culminates with the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus by Coast Guard boat. Other Nantucket holiday fun includes the Nantucket Whaling Museum’s Festival of Trees, composed of community-crafted trees designed by local merchants and artists, nonprofit organizations, and area children.
Ogunquit, Maine, is known for its Christmas by the Sea Festival, which features concerts, caroling, tastings, parades, tree lightings, and hay rides. This year’s 30th annual festival will take place Dec. 9 to 11.
And then there’s Newport, Rhode Island, with its Christmas at the Newport Mansions. During the holiday season, three of Newport’s famous mansions are decked out in colorful Christmas trees and decorations and offer music and tours.
