New Englanders looking to book an unforgettable trip next year won’t have to travel very far, according to Travel + Leisure magazine.
The publication named the Berkshires among the 50 best places to travel in the world in 2018, thanks to the region’s “thriving” farm-to-table food scene, leaf peeping opportunities, and many arts venues.
The list, compiled by T+L‘s editors, travel advisory board, and worldwide travel writers, features places “at the forefront of the global conversation, whether for new hotels and museums or major international events,” according to the publication.
The arts “have long been their own major draw” to the Berkshires, wrote T+L editors, who lauded cultural mainstays such as Tanglewood, the Clark Art Institute, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Mass MoCA. Last summer, Mass MoCA’s 130,000 square-foot expansion made it the largest contemporary art museum in the country, editors noted.
According to the publication, the Berkshires will welcome two new museums to North Adams next year: a Global Contemporary Art Museum and the Extreme Model Railroad & Contemporary Architecture Museum.
“At the Global Contemporary Art Museum, curators will work directly with artists to acquire and commission site-specific pieces, while the Extreme Model Railroad & Contemporary Architecture Museum will showcase works by the likes of Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, all built in miniature as part of an elaborate model train system,” editors wrote.
Also in the works is a new resort, called Tourists, that T+L said will be “situated on 55 acres at the convergence of the Appalachian and Mohawk Trails,” and will have “floor-to-ceiling windows that put the focus on surrounding vistas.”
