New England is brimming with quaint bed-and-breakfasts, so how do you choose the one that’s right for you?
TripAdvisor users have done the legwork, naming six New England B&Bs among the best in the country. The travel site’s users were impressed with three in Massachusetts, two in Maine, and one in Vermont, all of which appear on a list of the top 25 B&Bs and inns in the United States, part of the site’s 2018 Travelers’ Choice Awards announced last month.
1862 Seasons on Main in Stockbridge came away the top-rated B&B in New England and No. 2 on the list, beat out only by The Cedar House Inn in St. Augustine, Florida. Located on the street Norman Rockwell made famous in his 1967 painting “Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas (Home for Christmas),” the Berkshires B&B offers guest rooms with fresh flowers, designer robes, down-filled beds, fireplaces, and private baths with claw-foot tubs. Daily social times feature wine and cheese or ice cream, and a daily gourmet breakfast includes homemade bread and muffins.
The Captain David Kelley House in Centerville, a Cape Cod B&B in a restored 19th-century sea captain’s quarters, nabbed No. 5. The flagship room in the historic 1835 Greek Revival home boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, hardwood floors, and Federal-period furniture. Breakfast is served fireside in the colder months and on a screened porch overlooking the gardens in warmer weather.
“Completely delightful experience,” one TripAdvisor user said in a comment pulled by the site.
Both of the Maine stays that made the list are found in Ogunquit: At The Gazebo Inn Ogunquit, No. 8, guests stay in a restored 1847 farmhouse and barn and soak in an outdoor 5,000-gallon salt hot tub year-round. The library has an ocean view, and every room has a gas fireplace. At The Trellis House, No. 9, visitors can sleep in suites with ocean views or rent a private cottage nestled inside a garden.
Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast in Salem, No. 13, has a third-floor roof deck with an ocean view. The home, built around 1808, is located across the street from the historic House of the Seven Gables made famous by author Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Vermont’s The Jackson House Inn, No. 24, was built in 1890 and has rooms with gas fireplaces and a freshwater pond on the grounds.
