A Boston harborside hotel famous for its 60-foot-tall archway has just been named America’s hotel of the year.

Boston Harbor Hotel is the winner of hotel of the year for the United States and Canada in the 2018 Preferred Hotels & Resorts Awards of Excellence. Preferred Hotels & Resorts is the world’s largest independent hotel brand, representing more than 700 hotels, resorts, residences, and hotel groups across 85 countries.

The five-star Boston Harbor Hotel offers 230 rooms and suites on Boston’s historic Rowes Wharf. Patrons can sip drinks at the hotel’s Rowes Wharf Bar, and dine at Rowes Wharf Sea Grille and Meritage Restaurant and Wine Bar, where recently appointed chef de cuisine Keith Bombaugh aims to “tell a story with food.” Inside the Rowes Wharf Health Club & Spa, guests can swim laps in a three-lane, 60-foot-long swimming pool (though it’s currently closed for renovations), work out with a certified personal trainer in the fully-equipped gym, and relax inside a jacuzzi and eucalyptus-infused steam room. Between June and August, the hotel hosts a Summer in the City concert and movie series on the water.

Hotels nominated for this award ranked among the top in their region based on the company’s quality assurance program, which takes into account a professional on-site inspection and reviews from top consumer review sites. A team of regional leaders from Preferred Hotels & Resorts then narrowed down the list of nominees in each category before an awards committee chose the winners.

Preferred Hotels & Resorts also recognized Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, by awarding it a GIFTTS Pineapple Award for the hotel’s commitment to education. GIFTTS stands for Great Initiatives for Today’s (Tomorrow’s) Society and recognizes hotels for outstanding contributions in philanthropy, environment, and community.

Inn by the Sea hosts ecology walks with a naturalist, garden tours with the head gardener of the resort, and guided walks where the entire family can learn about the local ecosystem and wildlife. The resort also helps local schools throughout the year, buying a school library book for every December reservation, hosting Earth Day programs, and inviting kids to the inn to learn about its habitat restoration collaboration with the Department of Conservation in which invasive plants are removed and replaced with plants that help with the survival of New England cottontail rabbits.
